5 Ways to create better portraits on any camera (including your phone!)

There are 5 basic elements to take into consideration for a great portrait: Emotion and personality of the subject, location, lighting, composition and your creativity.

1. Connect with your subject. 🤝 😍

Rule number one for me is making my subject feel comfortable before starting the photo shoot. Taking great portraits is not only about the gear and the technical settings, but so much more also about people skills. Connecting and creating a relaxed atmosphere is essential for great images. A subject that is at ease will result in wonderful, candid images that capture the moment, the emotions and personality. Have a conversation with your subject and just click away while you are chatting.

2. Pay attention to the background. 🏙 🏞

A cluttered or distracting background, will take away the viewer’s attention from the subject. Make sure your background is even and complements the subject.

3. Light. Light. Light. 💡 ☀️

Get That Perfect Portrait Lighting. Every photo is made of light. When it comes to a capturing your subject in a perfect portrait, the source, nature and amount of light are equally important. Try different positions to your light source. Also, avoid harsh lighting during midday. Late afternoon with warm, flattering light is the best time to photograph. Also shooting in shaded areas or during a slightly overcast day always works well.

4. It’s all about the Eyes. 👀

What is the first you look at in a portrait? For many it is the eyes, as we are naturally inclined to making eye contact with someone. The eyes are the windows to the soul and a reflection of the true essence of the person. Focus on the eyes, place them in the golden ratios.

5. Posing, Angles & Experiment. 📐 🖼

Experiment with different angles. Try different poses. Try to crop. Get in close. Your subject should take up to 75% of the frame. Let your creativity guide you.
